Tengizchevroil was the general sponsor of the fourth annual Eurasian Energy Forum which was the cornerstone event of KazEnergy Week in Astana September 21-25. The sponsorship gave TCO an opportunity to share our story with the hundreds of top energy business representatives and government officials who attended from around the world.
TCO Hosts Second Annual International Sulfur Conference
The week began with Monday's Second Annual International Sulfur Conference which was cosponsored by TCO and Shell in coordination with the Embassies of the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. The purpose of the conference is to share experience and best practices from around the world and Kazakhstan on regulating and utilizing this valuable commodity.
Todd Levy, TCO general director, opened the conference alongside the three Ambassadors, Asset Magauov, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and Jambulat Sersenov, KazEnergy general director.
Raushan Sarmurzina, director of the Petro chemistry Department of MEMR, spoke about projects that MEMR and TCO are working on together to ensure that Kazakhstan's regulation of sulfur inventories is consistent with international standards.
Rzabek Artygaliev, general manager of Government and Public Affairs, facilitated the panel on Sulfur Production: Challenges and Opportunities, Present and Future. Murat Munbaev, deputy general manager of Strategic Planning, gave an update on TCO's sulfur strategy. He highlighted continued sulfur sales success, new relationships with domestic customers like Kazatomprom and investments that TCO is making in order to further increase export capacity at Tengiz.
The result of the sulfur conference is that a working group will be formed in order to help encourage regulation that leverages international standards and new and innovative uses of sulfur in Kazakhstan.
KazEnergy's Fourth Eurasian Energy Forum
The forum was opened by Prime Minister Karim Massimov; Timur Kulibayev, Chairman of KazEnergy Association; and the MEMR Minister, Sauat Munbaev; and Kairgeldy Kabildyn, President of KazMunaiGas. Their talks focused on Kazakhstan's progress in becoming a global energy supplier. Additionally, they discussed the next steps to continue Kazakhstan's prominence in an innovative and growing energy supplier.
Levy discussed Tengizchevroil's success with its Operational Excellence Management System and how it has positively impacted TCO's performance in the areas of safety, environmental protection, reliability and nationalization (read his speech on www.tengizchevroil.com).
Tengizchevroil Wins Prometheus Award
Levy accepted the first Prometheus award of the evening on behalf of Tengizchevroil. TCO won the Best Innovative Project award for the new Sour Gas Injection facility at Tengiz. This facility is injecting sour gas back into the Tengiz reservoir at the highest pressures and at the highest rates of hydrogen sulfide in the world. Additionally, gas injection is important to help slow down the pressure drop in the reservoir.
In his acceptance speech, Levy highlighted the role the project has played in putting Kazakhstan on the map as a leader in executing innovative projects and the latest in reservoir management technology.
TCO also presented in four other panel sessions. On Monday, Khalel Sailybaev, Human Resources compensation and benefits manager, represented TCO at a panel entitled Human Resource Policy of Energy Companies. Also on Monday, Valeriy Bulovich, TCO senior legal counsel, participated in a roundtable on the Key Issues of the Taxation of Subsoil Users. Artygaliev and Linsi Crain, deputy general manager of GPA, presented at a Media Day forum entitled: Strategic Communications during Changing Global Conditions. They highlighted how TCO works cooperatively with the media and the importance of a two-way interaction between reporters and companies.
On Tuesday, Svetlana Tulepbergenova, manager of tax compliance, represented Tengizchevroil at the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) roundtable. TCO joined EITI in 2008 and is very supportive of Kazakhstan's intention to join this international initiative.
TCO Hosts Stakeholders at its Exhibition
TCO also had a booth at the KazEnergy Week exhibition. The exhibition featured a model of a sulfur granulation unit like the ones currently used in Tengiz. TCO will be building more granulation units to help expand its production capacity of granulated sulfur, which some customers prefer. TCO also showed an animated video on the award-winning sour gas injection process being used at Tengiz. The video demonstrates how injected gas will move oil currently stuck in tiny rocks in the reservoir to producing wells.
The booth was manned by TCO's knowledgeable Astana team who were able to help answer many questions from stakeholders over the three day exhibition.
