When it comes to local content, measuring our performance is important to track our success. Calculation and reporting of Kazakhstani content spent is one of the legal requirements for TCO. It’s in our best interests to ensure that TCO suppliers are familiar with methodology of KC calculation. On a quarterly basis we conduct relevant training for our Business Partners that cover certain aspects of Subsoil Use Code and governmental decrees, which govern the calculation of local content, basic concepts and definitions, and examples of calculating KC in goods and services spent. Please note that this training is dedicated to TCO’s current suppliers and contractors only.
On 21 April 2025, an ecology festival called “Taza Kazakhstan” took place in Astana. In 2024, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev launched the "Taza Kazakhstan" campaign which includes the holding of clean-up days, as well as landscaping of cities and villages throughout the country.
At the event in Astana, the Head of State shared the results of this national campaign and interacted with participants of the campaign. The number of participants in "Taza Kazakhstan" during 2024 exceeded 6 million people, while 1.8 million hectares of land were cleaned, 1.1 million tons of garbage were collected, and more than 1.6 million trees and plants were planted.
“By putting things in order and planting trees, we create a comfortable and healthy environment,” the Head of State emphasized in his speech. - It is important to remove waste, save water and electricity, and not litter public places. Special attention should be paid to environmental education. This is one of the key directions of the national campaign “Taza Kazakhstan”.
President Tokayev also noted contribution of companies, including “Tengizchevroil” LLP (TCO): “I just walked around the stands where the activities of companies that pay attention to the environment were exhibited. I am grateful for this! A new environmental culture is being formed in the society.”
Kevin Lyon, TCO General Director, presenting the environmental achievements of TCO to the President, noted that protecting people and the environment are core values for the company and the framework and intent of “Taza Kazakhstan” is closely aligned with the way TCO operates its business.
“Since 2022 the company has planted over 12,000 seedlings in Zhylyoi District. We plan to continue our tree planting activities this year," said Kevin Lyon. In addition, he noted the contribution of the company’s employees and their active participation in cleanup days and landscaping activities as part of “Taza Kazakhstan” campaign. But one of the most impactful activities of the year was TCO's participation in the cleanup and removal of more than 22,000 tons of debris from the streets of Kulsary as a result of the flood situation in spring last year.
It should be noted that since its foundation, TCO has focused on continuously improving environmental performance. The company has invested more than $3 billion to date in environmental protection measures. Through the application of advanced technologies, TCO reduced its emissions intensity by more than 70% and improved the waste recycling to about 50%. Also, due to the water recycling and conservation efforts, the water intake from the main water pipeline in Western Kazakhstan is a modest 5% given the scale of the production capacity of the Tengiz field.
